The God Who Sees in Secret

It seems there are certain teachings of Jesus that stick out and stay with us for years—not just because they challenge us, but because they change us. This passage from Matthew 6 is one of those for me.

"When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing."

I’ve read it many times over the years. And for most of my life, I heard it primarily as a word of caution. A reminder not to give or pray or serve for the approval of others.

And to be fair, that is exactly what Jesus is saying here. His words are an important warning against proclaiming your good deeds for the wrong reasons. “Don’t announce your giving with trumpets,” He says. “Don’t be like those who pray just to be seen.”

That teaching is still absolutely true—and needed. In a world where so much is measured by attention, Jesus redirects us toward humility and quiet faithfulness—which might be even more important in a world where just a few clicks can announce your good works to the entire world.

But recently, something else in this passage caught my attention.

Something I had read before, certainly, but never fully absorbed. In calling us to secret generosity and private prayer, Jesus also makes a beautiful promise. Read the passage again. It's not just a call to secrecy, but also an amazing promise:

Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

What a stunning truth!

Jesus isn’t just telling us to serve quietly—He’s reminding us that God sees all of it. That the moments no one else notices are still noticed by Him.

The acts of love, service, prayer, sacrifice, and obedience done in secret are not forgotten. They are seen. And they matter.

If you’ve been:

  • Praying faithfully for your child or spouse with no visible answer yet…
  • Quietly giving to support your church or a struggling friend…
  • Choosing integrity at work when no one would know if you didn’t…
  • Serving behind the scenes—rocking babies, cleaning up, delivering meals…
  • Holding back words out of kindness, offering forgiveness, or just showing up…

God sees all of it.

This isn’t just a command to stay humble—it’s an invitation to be encouraged. You don’t need to be seen by others in order for your work to matter. You are already seen by the One who matters most.

So don’t grow weary.

Your Father sees what is done in secret. And He will reward you—in ways far better than human praise could ever offer.
